To meet the increasing global demand for cement, energy-saving calcining plants with high specific outputs were developed in the industrialized countries, and introduced worldwide. A pioneering result of these developments is the precalciner kiln with a short rotary section. Hereby, the importance of alternative fuels has also increased.

Accordingly, suitable refractory products and lining systems must be found for these developments, as the conditions inside a kiln are a determining factor for its service life.
